The Tatlin Series
These two relief paintings are from a developing body of work which more fully explores three-dimensionality. Where can painting go today for inspiration? Architecture is one of those realms that Loven draws ideas from, in this case the visionary architect Vladimir Tatlin. A future exhibition at Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery will feature the entire series. The 1x and 2x notations after titles, indicates the scale of enlargement from the studio prototype of each design. This series draws upon ideas from the Russian Constructivists, and in particular Vladimir Tatlin (1885-1953). Tatlin was a pioneer of wall-mounted abstract constructions. Sometimes paint was involved, but he always employed simple materials shaped by industry. Tatlin was a painter, sculptor and visionary architect. There are three groups in this series. LeTatlin Group. Named for the flying machine invented by Tatlin in the early 1930s. This human powered glider never flew, and is remembered as a sculpture more than anything else. The ribbed wing of Letatlin is a motif that appears in the Tatlin Series as an abstracted ribbed motif. Tatlins Vessel Group. Tatlin began his early adult life as a sailor. This group is limited to all wood versions of these compositions. The allusion is to wooden sailing vessels and to wooden coffins. Tatlins Ghost Group. These are all-white versions of the compositions. An amazing thing about Tatlin is that almost everything he made has been lost in the sands of time--even his most memorable work The Monument to the Third International, an architectural model proposing a gigantic, kinetic skyscraper for Moscow. Despite all this, the influence of Tatlin remains, lingering like a benign ghost over art and architecture schools around the globe. |
